I had such a great team on these projects, and we were all led by my talented DP homie Jack Grove. We filmed at 4 different senior living centers across Southern California, so it was an adventure! There was no real lighting plan as every location was so different, but we tried to always get a 1200 and 600 outside to do a lively punch through the windows, and then we would use the infinimat through some 1/2 grid to get a soft wrap for the key. There are plenty of other shots outside, but we always shot all natty outside!
This was a very simple, but very beautiful project to be a part of! With the recent fires in Los Angeles and the recent firing of multiple national park workers, it seemed fitting to raise some money for national parks. My buddy Jack owns a clothing business called Auteur Theory, so he sold some t-shirts as a fundraiser. All I did was place our 1200D outside the window to edge out our subject and then set up and ultrabounce on the far side of camera to catch any light from the 1200. The fill side was just a wall of 6x6 neg. For the fire effect at the end, I slowly brought up the intensity of our 2x4 Infinimat which was ready to go with its fire effect on Sidus Link. Very simple, but very effective.
I was hired to be the gaffer for this project, but the DP ended up operating a VHS camera the entire time, so I had to practically DP the whole shoot and do all of the lighting. The vibe was supposed to be vintage and nostalgic. With the little time we had, I think we did a pretty good job, but Rokinon lenses are not known for vintage or nostalgic quality. In fact, they are very clean lenses which I believe worked against us, but I was still happy to shoot a project with all my own personal equipment! Personally, I love the results. We primarily used the 600d to push through a 6x6 half grid to create a soft key. If the 600 was being used for something else like a backlight (In the bedroom), then we found ways to push the f22c through some diffusion as our key. The director did not want a lot of contrast, and I think we found a way to do that on the faces, yet still keep the image interesting with other kinds of contrast (framing, color, wardrobe). This was shot on my BlackMagic Pocket 6k G2 with Rokinon Primes.
This was a lovely project to be a part of. Our goal is to tell stories of how God can turn something traumatic into something beautiful with the power of Jesus. Parable offers an incredible and supportive community for many young teens who feel alone or hopeless. By spreading the power of Jesus, they wish to restore hope to many high schooler's who feel like they have no future. The main key for this video was a Nova 300C pushing through a 6x6 full grid with a 600d Pro backlighting the subject. In hindsight, I would have put the 600d on the key side, so we don't get those weird ear shadows, but you live and learn! We used a dual cam set-up with two Black Magic 6K's and Rokinon cine primes.
For this project, Atlas Lens Co. and Sundae School teamed up to help market the new Atlas Orion 18mm Anamorphic Lens! I got to work with the legendary Griffin Voth, and had a blast. We primarily used our 1200D and 600C for this shoot. The locations already gave us some great ideas, so we honestly kept it simple just putting lights through windows or giving them domes, and then using haze to create beams. The bedroom also required a lot of negative as all the walls were white. We shot on an Alexa Mini LF with the Atlas Orion 18mm Anamorphic lens.
I have been working with Allura for a couple years now making promotional videos and product explanation videos! They are a fantastic medical spa with locations in Loveland, Colorado and Fort Collins, Colorado. I shoot and edit the videos by myself, but I am directed by the head of marketing at Allura. These most recent videos were shot with my personal BlackMagic Pocket 6K.
While editing is not what I primarily do, I absolutely love it! These short advertisements for TikTok Shop were pretty fun and easy to make. The most complicated parts of the process were key framing all of the zooms and movement of the captions. I definitely want to get more into freelance editing, especially if I can work from home!
This was a phenomenal project to be a part of! As the Key Grip, I worked with the gaffer to create the exact look that the client wanted. This involved creating a huge soft source for our key using a Cream Source SpaceX with an Octo-dome through an 8x8 silent half-grid. We lit the background using Aputure p600C's, and our hairlight was an Aputure 1200D. For fill, we would either purely use a V-Flat or we would bounce a Source 4 off of the V-Flat
